Lauren Giustra MD, FACOG
Dr. Giustra graduated from Saint Joseph's College in Windham, Maine in 1988. She received her Medical Degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr Giustra then moved to Rome, New York with her husband Dr. Ankur Desai and co-founded Mohawk Valley Women's Health Associates in 1996.
Dr Giustra has received several awards during her career. She was the recipient of the YWCA Mohawk Valley's Salute to Outstanding Women Award in 2003. She and Dr.Desai were also recognized by The Genesis Group and The Medical Societies of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties and awarded "Outstanding Physicians of the Year" in 2015. Dr. Giustra has been Board Certified since November 2000. She is a member of the American Medical Association, Oneida County Medical Society and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Dr. Giustra has dedicated over 20 years to her patients and community in Upstate New York. She strives to give every patient the highest level of medical care through all phases of their life, from puberty to menopause. She enjoys caring for her pregnant patients whether it be for an uncomplicated or a high risk pregnancy. Dr. Giustra is passionate about many areas of gynecology ranging from well-women exams, contraception management and basic infertility to advanced gynecologic surgery. Away from her practice she enjoys gardening and cooking, but most of her free time is spent raising her four beautiful and very active children.
Ankur M. Desai MD, FACOG
Dr. Desai was raised in New York City. After graduating summa cum laude from Wagner College with a BS in Chemistry, he went to the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn and received his Medical Degree in 1992. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hahnemann University Hospital in 1996. Dr. Desai then moved to Rome, New York with his wife Dr. Lauren Giustra and co-founded Mohawk Valley Women's Health Associates in 1996.
Dr. Desai has received several awards. At Hahnemann University Hospital he was named chief resident of the year as well as administrative chief resident of the year. With Dr Giustra he was recognized by The Genesis Group and The Medical Societies of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties and awarded "Outstanding Physicians of the Year" in 2015. Dr. Desai has been Board Certified since 1998. He is a member of the American Medical Association, Oneida County Medical Society and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
In addition to having an active medical practice he is serving as a member of the Board of Trustees of Rome Memorial Hospital. He is presently the Interim Chief Medical Officer of Rome Memorial Hospital as well as the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has also served multiple terms as the president of the Medical Staff of Rome Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Desai has both professionally and personally assisted in the care of patients in the community. His interests are in all aspects of well woman care, low and high risk pregnancies and advanced gynecologic surgery. He spends his free time reading, watching movies and following NY sport teams. He has four very active children that he attempts to keep up with.
Georges Akl, MD FACOG
Dr. Akl received his medical degree from the Lebanese University in Beirut, Lebanon, and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse during which he was elected as ACOG District II, section 5 Junior fellow chairman for 2 consecutive years. Dr Akl has been Board Certified since April 2017, and is currently a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, as well as The Oneida County Medical Society.
Dr Akl treats and manages an array of medical conditions in Obstetrics and Gynecology, ranging from routine well women exams and pregnancy, to contraception, infections, endometriosis, chronic pelvic pains, menstrual disorders, cervical dysplasia, uterine fibroids, basic infertility, menopause, urinary incontinence and many others. He has special interest in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, both laparoscopic and vaginal.
Karen Flick, ANP
Karen is a lifelong resident of the Mohawk Valley. As graduate of MVCC, she began her career as a registered nurse in ICU at Rome Memorial Hospital. Karen enjoyed seven years of critical care nursing before an opportunity to diversify her career presented itself and she joined the staff at Planned Parenthood. While working at Planned Parenthood she realized her passion for women's health care and decided to expand her role. She attended the nurse practitioner program at Community General Hospital in Syracuse. Upon graduation, she took on the role of Clinic Director of Planned Parenthood's Rome Clinic. Her interest in obstetrics led her to positions at the Prenatal Clinics at Rome Hospital and St.Luke's Hospital before entering private practice. For the past 28 years Karen has had the pleasure of providing the highest quality care to women across the region. Each day is another day to both care for her patients with all the newest advances in women's health care, and an opportunity for her to expand her own knowledge in a field that will never stop changing. Karen’s attention to detail and outgoing personality have endeared her to her patients. She is a member of the Nurse Practitioner Association of New York State. She spends most of her free time with her ever-expanding family of four children and three grandchildren.
